‘Aarti’ is a ritual of worship in which light from wicks soaked in ghee on a ‘Thali’ (or plate) is waved in circular motions around a deity whilst singing its praises. This was and still is performed in the Mandir temples.

The Creator Lord of the universe cannot be confined within a small idol. In fact, His expanse cannot be known. An idol cannot be God; no person can create God in the form of an idol and neither can God be replicated in such a way. Guru Ji says, “Thhaapiaa N Jaae Keethaa N Hoe” i.e. He cannot be established, He cannot be created.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji explained how the Creator Lord is omnipresent and all-pervading throughout the universe. The fact is one cannot perform ‘Aarti’ because it is already happening. Guru Ji beautifully explains the splendour of this unaided ‘Aarti’ as follows:

Gagan Mai Thhaal Rav Cha(n)dh Dheepak Banae Thaarikaa Ma(n)ddal Janak Mothee ||
Upon that cosmic plate of the sky, the sun and the moon are the lamps. The stars and their orbs are the studded pearls.

The fragrance of sandalwood in the air is the temple incense, and the wind is the fan. All the plants of the world are the altar flowers in offering to You, O Luminous Lord. ||1||

The ‘Aarti’ or lamp-lit worship of the omnipresent almighty Creator is happening by itself, so what in comparison is a mere plate being waved in circular motions around a manmade idol? One cannot perform the ‘Aarti’, however, what one can indeed do is participate in the already happening ‘Aarti’ through an awakened consciousness – example, if ones consciousness is awed at how the universe is working, if ones consciousness becomes amazed at how the Earth has been rotating for billions of years etc.

Similarly, people cannot create religion. However, people can be religious.

God’s law is as it is. One cannot make a new law, or a new religion. The Creator Lord has already created religion, what Guru Nanak Dev Ji created was a new path to understand this religion, a new path to understand God’s law. A Sikh walks on the path laid out by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji broke the cages made by people, cages that divided mankind into groups. Upon birth some were and are tonsured (‘Mundan’) and others circumcised (‘Sunat’) to mark them into certain religious groups. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was in favour of neither ‘Sunat’ nor ‘Mundan’. A Sikh is one who will remain exactly how the Creator made him.

What one must do is understand the laws of God and live one’s life in accordance to them. In whichever way the Creator has made us, that is how a Sikh is. We should remain as He created us from the outside, and by understanding His laws, we should also become religious from the inside. Both are equally important.

By making alterations to the creation of the Creator, one is implying he/she is rectifying a mistake by the mistake-less Creator.

A Sikh is often questioned about their uncut long hair, but the questions people ask are in reality illogical.

The question is NOT, “Why do Sikhs keep their hair?” – the real question is, “Why do you cut your hair?”

One major religious group cut off their skin and the other completely shaved their hair. But Guru Nanak Dev Ji rejected both and accepted only God’s law. However the Creator has fashioned us, that is how we should remain.
